I have realized over the last couple of years how the road map for living the Christian life can be summed up in a couple of Bible verses. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” It means quite simply to trust the Lord to guide you in every aspect of your life with no back up plan or safety net (to steal a phrase or two from one of our songs – “No Hands”!) When I pitched the lyric idea to Jeff for “No Hands,” I had the visual of an eight year old boy riding a bike without holding on to the handlebars, hands waving in the air, and shouting “Look, Ma, no hands!” Just as the boy “trusts” his balance (and not his hands) to guide him on his joyride, we should be equally willing to go “hands-free” and let Christ guide us in our walk. Jeff really captured the essence of that idea beautifully with his lyrics. However, it took several years of playing “No Hands” to recognize the song is just a reflection of my life verse – Proverbs 3:5-6.
