Like many, I grew up in a Christian home. I always considered myself a Christian but I wasn’t living the right life. By the time I was in fifth grade I was drinking and smoking with friends. I was living a lie. Needless to say, I got caught. My parents basically locked me down at the house. I was allowed to go to school, church, and youth group events. The summer before my freshman year of high school I went on a mission’s trip to Tijuana, Mexico with my youth group. I really didn’t want to go but it was better than just sitting at home. Before we went to Mexico we stayed in Los Angeles to do some training. One evening they had a service where we were to write down sins that we had never turned over to God. When we were done, the staff collected the slips of paper and placed them in a bag. A few minutes later, we found ourselves in the middle of a passion play depicting the death of Christ. When the soldiers took Christ to the cross, he was wearing that bag of sins around his neck. When he was taken off of the cross and carried away, the bag remained on the cross. This was the first time that I fully comprehended how much God really does love us. That night I prayed with one of the pastors there and turned my life over to Christ. I won’t be fake and tell you that I haven’t stumbled since then. Everyone struggles from time to time. What makes the difference is whether or not you turn it over to God and trust in him.
